MARK RUTHERFORD

Donated by regular contributor Alan, a late 19th Century photograph by much-lauded master of the Arcadian nude, Wilhelm von Gloeden. This image shows not just his excellent choice of strapping young men to pose before the camera, but also his attempt to attain aesthetic perfection. Look closely and you can see traces of the coloured oil-and-pigment mixture which with he annointed their bodies, filling in the pale untanned skin to create an even all-over bronzed ideal. Unfortunately, the stuff has run, leaving light streaks and revealing the tricks of the trade.
